Damascus Airport

Damascus International Airport has officially reopened

Table of content

After nearly 14 years of the Syrian revolution, the new government officially opened Damascus International Airport for international navigation.
During these years, Damascus International Airport suffered from neglect by the Assad regime, and flights were minimal due to Western sanctions on this criminal regime.

International Flights resumed at Syria’s main airport in Damascus for the first time

International flights resumed at Syria’s main airport in Damascus on Tuesday, Jan 7 for the first time, at approximately 11:45 AM, a Syrian Airlines flight bound for Sharjah departed, marking the first international commercial flight from Damascus International Airport since December 8, the aircraft proudly displayed Syria’s three-star independence flag, a symbol historically linked to opposition to the Assad regime and now embraced by the new government. During the Assad regime, flights to Syria were predominantly operated by local carriers, including Syrian Airlines and the privately owned Fly Cham (previously Cham Wings) Airlines. A few international airlines, such as Iraq’s Fly Baghdad, also offered limited services.
Destinations were restricted to a handful of countries, including Iraq, the UAE, Egypt, Russia, and Iran.

Following the official reopening of Damascus International Airport, Royal Jordanian Airlines and Qatar Airways were among the first international carriers to resume flights to Syria.
Additionally, several Turkish airlines have also started organizing flights, marking a significant step toward reconnecting Syria with the global aviation network.

International tourism is slowly returning to Syria

Since 2019, Syria has emerged as a destination for adventure tourism and for travelers seeking a deeper understanding of conflict and its impact. This trend is expected to continue for at least the next five years, as the country faces significant challenges in rebuilding its infrastructure and achieving political stability—both essential for large-scale reconstruction efforts, following the fall of the Assad regime, a significant number of journalists and media professionals traveled to Syria to document this historic moment, while many Syrians living abroad returned to celebrate the country’s new chapter. With the security situation steadily improving and interprovincial roads being secured, Syria is on the path to revival. Tourist trips to the country are starting, with plans already underway for the upcoming spring season.
