How is the Education System in Syria

Table of content

Syria’s education system tells a powerful story of strength and hope.
For travelers who want to understand real Syrian life, knowing about education shows how important learning is to Syrian culture and how people keep going even when things are hard.
Education in Syria isn’t just about school – it’s about building a better future.
Even through very difficult times, Syrians have shown that learning matters more than anything.

Current Education System: How It Works

School System: From Age 6 to 15

In Syria, all children must go to school from age 6 until they finish 9th grade.
This means every Syrian child gets at least 9 years of basic education.
The school system has three levels:
    1. Primary school: 6 years.
    2. Preparatory school: 3 years.
    3. Secondary school: 3 years.

Syria offers something special – most universities are completely free for Syrian students! Some only charge a small registration fee, which is affordable.
There are different types of universities:
    Public universities:
Free education for Syrians, top universities like Damascus University (The oldest and most famous) and Aleppo University.
Private universities: Higher fees but more options.
Virtual university: Online learning available everywhere.

    Learning During Hard Times

Many Syrian schools were damaged during the conflict, but that didn’t stop learning. Teachers and students found ways to continue:
    – Some schools continued operating even with broken windows and damaged walls.
    – Classes were held in safe buildings like community centers and mosques.
    – Teachers worked without pay because they believed in their students’ future.

Unfortunately, not all children can continue in school.
Many children lost their parents or were forced to leave their homes. These children faced the biggest challenges:
    – Some had to work to survive.
    – Others moved to different cities and couldn’t find new schools.
    – Many children missed months or even years of school.
The Syrian government is working to help these children catch up on what they missed.
The Ministry of Education has big plans to help the new generation:
School repairs, teacher training, student support, and building new schools.

    Challenges and Hope

Despite these challenges, there are many reasons to be hopeful:
    – Syrians never give up on education.
    – Young people are eager to learn and build their future.
    – The government is investing in education again.
    – International partners are helping improve schools.
