How to Go from Damascus to Palmyra: The Complete Day Trip Guide

Table of content

Palmyra is the ancient city everyone pictures when they dream of Syria. Golden columns standing in the middle of the desert, a Roman theater, a hilltop castle watching over the ruins.
It was once one of the richest cities on the Silk Road, and in the 3rd century AD, Queen Zenobia ruled an empire that stretched from Turkey to Egypt.

The good news: Palmyra sits only about 215 kilometers from Damascus, which makes it the most popular day trip from the capital.
In this guide, Syria Scope Travel is happy to tell you how to get there, what it costs, and how to make the most of your day.

The route from Damascus to Palmyra

The drive from Damascus to Palmyra takes about 3.5 hours. You leave the city, cross the Qalamoun mountains, and watch the landscape slowly turn into open desert.
The road is paved and comfortable, and the scenery alone is part of the experience. Because of the distance, you have two main options for the trip: public transport or a private tour.

    Option 1: Public transport

You can reach Palmyra by public bus from Damascus.
The catch is that buses run at fixed times for departure and return and are not always reliable for tourism, so you will have to spend only a few hours in Palmyra, which is a very short time, missing the best hours at the site, or you will have to stay the night there and return the next day during the scheduled return times of the buses.

Option 2: A private day tour from Damascus

This is the way most travelers do it, and honestly, the way we recommend. With the Syria Palmyra Tour, you get picked up near your hotel in Damascus at 8:30 AM and driven straight to the ruins with a plan already made for you. The tour runs from morning to sunset, which is the secret ingredient.
Palmyra at golden hour is something else.
The columns glow orange, the desert cools down, and the photos you take are on a different level.

If you love shooting, our guide to your camera in Syria has a whole section on photography.

You arrive back in Damascus around sunset, dropped off near your hotel.

What you will see in Palmyra

Even though the city suffered serious damage during the ISIS occupation in 2015, many remarkable structures still stand, and the site remains one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the Middle East.

During the tour, you will explore the highlights: The Arch of Triumph, the Great Colonnade stretching through the heart of the ancient city, the Roman Theater, the Agora, several ancient tombs, and the natural sulphur spring. On the hill above the ruins sits Qalaat ibn Maan, the Palmyra castle, with the best panoramic view of the whole valley.

    Lunch in a Bedouin tent

Halfway through the day, you will pause for lunch inside a traditional Bedouin tent, hosted by a local family.
It is authentic desert food, strong tea, and warm Syrian hospitality, the kind of meal you will remember as much as the ruins themselves.

    Staying overnight in Palmyra?

Prefer to slow down? You can also stay overnight in a hotel in Palmyra and visit the ruins the next morning when the light is soft, and the site is quiet.
Some travelers do the day tour, enjoy the sunset, and simply stay the night instead of driving back.

    Syria Palmyra Tour prices

    Participants and price per person:
    1 participant: $320, in a crossover car
2 participants: $170 each, in a crossover car
3 to 5 participants: $150 each, in a tourism van

Beyond Palmyra: more day trips from Damascus

Palmyra is not the only place you can reach from Damascus. Wherever you feel like going, you can book a day trip with Syria Scope Travel; you just pick the region, and we take care of the rest: the road, the timing, and the plan.

That said, some destinations deserve more than one day. Aleppo is the best example: it is a large city full of tourist and archaeological sites, from the citadel to the old souqs, so it is better to give it at least two or three nights instead of squeezing it into a day trip.
The same logic applies to longer routes along the Syrian coast. Think of it this way: if the distance is short, a day trip is perfect, and if the region is rich, stay longer and enjoy it slowly.

Ready to walk through 2,000 years of history in one day? Book the Syria Palmyra Tour and let us take care of the road, the timing, and the sunset.
