Best Photos of Syria: Pictures That Will Make You Book a Trip

Table of content

    Some countries you read about.
    Syria you have to see.
This collection of the best photos of Syria shows you what waits on the other side of the news: welcoming faces, ancient stones, snowy mountains, and streets full of life.
The journey starts the moment your plane lands.

The Journey Begins at Damascus Airport

Your first photo happens before you even leave the airport. Inside Damascus International Airport, a sign greets every arriving traveler with the words: Welcome to your homeland.
These words were written above all for the Syrians who spent long years away from their country, because the previous regime banned them from entering.
For them, coming home was a dream, and this sign says it out loud.
Also, if you enter Syria from Lebanon through the Jdeidet Yabous crossing, or from Jordan through the Nasib crossing, you will find the same warm greeting at the border.
Even if Syria is not your homeland yet, it will feel like it by the time you leave.

Celebrations in the Streets of Syria

In Umayyad Square in Damascus, crowds fill the ground around the fountains celebrating the fall of Assad’s regime.
Tens of thousands of people stand shoulder to shoulder, celebrating together. Photos like this show what numbers cannot: a capital that is alive, proud, and open for visitors.

Damascus nights carry their own magic.
In this photo, a traditional arada group performs in a candlelit old street. The arada is a folk celebration performed at Syrian weddings, and also for other happy occasions, like a migrant returning home or a student passing their university or baccalaureate exams.
Most often, you will see it at weddings, where it opens the celebration with drums, poetry, and sword dancing.

Syria also knows how to party. At the Marmarita carnival in August, the streets fill with costumes, music, and decorated cars, in one of the biggest festivals in the Middle East. On this day, everyone becomes a performer, and every corner of the village becomes a stage.

Aleppo: A City of Stone and Craft

The Citadel of Aleppo rises over the city like a stone ship. People have walked up its bridge for thousands of years, and today you can too. From the top, the whole old city spreads under your feet.

In the heart of the city, the Bab al-Faraj clock tower has watched over its square for more than a century.
It is a favorite meeting point for locals, and a beautiful subject for street photography.

Some of the best photos of Syria are not landmarks at all. In the souqs of Aleppo, stacks of famous Aleppo soap dry in towers, waiting for months before they are ready. Made from olive and laurel oil, exactly as it has been made for centuries. Take the photo, then take a few cubes home.

    Aleppo Soap or Sabon Ghar
Imagine traveling to Syria and experiencing the famed Aleppo soap firsthand.

Markets like this one fill Aleppo’s old souqs with color. Handmade pottery, woven baskets, and copper pieces line the stalls. Every photo you take here supports the artisans who kept their crafts alive through the hardest years.

Palmyra: Golden Columns in the Desert

Palmyra needs no introduction, but it deserves your camera. The Great Colonnade stretches through the desert with rows of columns that go on and on, casting long shadows across the sand.
Walking this street is like walking through a 2,000-year-old dream.

Everywhere you look in Palmyra, another frame appears: broken temples, carved stones, and the castle watching from the hill above.
The light here is magical, especially in the early morning and late afternoon. Want to see it yourself? Book our Syria Palmyra Tour, and we will handle everything.

Our full guide to the Damascus to Palmyra day trip explains how to get there, what it costs, and when to go.

    Bosra: The Black Basalt City

In the south, the Roman theater of Bosra waits almost untouched, built entirely of black basalt stone.
Two thousand years old and still standing in one piece, with seats, stage, and acoustics that still work.

From above, the theater shows its true shape: a perfect semicircle embraced by the old town.
Few ancient theaters anywhere in the world survive like this one.

Bosra keeps more secrets than its theater. This ancient pool once collected water for the Roman city, and today it sits quietly under big desert skies, waiting for your camera.

The Syrian Coast: Turquoise Water and Green Mountains

Syria is not only desert. On the Latakia coast, the Mediterranean turns a turquoise that does not look real, tucked between green mountains. Small coves like this one are perfect for swimming, seafood, and quiet mornings by the water.

Higher along the coast, the road opens to wide blue views over the sea. A boat leaves its white trail across the water, and the mountains fall straight into the Mediterranean. This is one of the most photographed corners of the Syrian coast.
